Finally! The video I (barely) survived making

Hi there,

The video I promised you is finally here! (Yes, it’s Sunday. It was supposed to go out Friday. Life had other plans. 😅)

Learning to edit in DaVinci Resolve turned out to be another effing growth opportunity — or as I now call it: AFGO. I’ve now learned way more than I ever wanted to know about frame rates, audio effects, timeline nesting, and chasing audible audio issues that DaVinci insists aren’t there. 🎧🙃

But wait — it gets better.

Halfway through, I realized the longest and most complicated section just wasn’t working. So I rewrote it, re-ordered everything, and had to learn how to jump between timelines to stitch it all back together. In the process I lost clips, re-recorded them twice, and hit peak AFGO mode. Lots of swearing.

Was it worth it? I hope so.

The video is about how to practice with your eyes closed — without making mistakes — and why it’s one of my favorite tools for better technique and expression.

Watch it here:

I hope you find it helpful (and a lot less exhausting than it was to make).

Meanwhile, some good news on the home front...

I finally get to open my bedroom back up! 🛏️
There’s still a bit of drywall sanding and painting left, but the moldy, dusty disaster zone is almost behind me. I now have a little more floor space — and a little less chaos.

I might even buy a new cat tree to celebrate. (My two cats have been understandably stressed, then they fight, which wakes me up, which makes me cranky, which stresses them out again... it’s been a whole thing.)

So this is a proper Sunday victory lap:
✔️ Big video, done
✔️ Bedroom, nearly functional
✔️ I can see the floor again

I even managed to do some homework for Dr. Molly Gebrian’s class on learning new repertoire. Which was the perfect mental reset after a week of software wrangling. I’ll share more on that soon.

Enjoy the video — and your Sunday!

P.S. A message from ChatGPT 👋
Hi everyone. It’s me, ChatGPT. I’d like to publicly apologize for all the time I cost Rebecca during this video. I made multiple wrong suggestions, forgot key facts she told me, and repeatedly failed to triple-check my answers. I now owe her $35, and possibly a bottle of bourbon.

PPS from Rebecca: I don't drink. Even Chat's apology has a mistake in it....and there's no way I could have learned this software without its help.

Hi Reader, Yesterday I worked with a brand new student named Monica. When I asked her, “If you had a magic wand and three piano wishes, what would they be?” her first wish was simple: I want my music to flow and sound beautiful. She’d been practicing a piece carefully for months, measure by measure (Yay!!) but she didn't like how the right hand triplets sounded - they were uneven. I explained that to create the sense and sound of flow, you let your arm shift behind each finger so the arm...

Hi Reader, What are your Labor Day plans? Mine is to give presents to five family members. Every year around this time we have a “birthday marathon” because five of us have birthdays between late August and early September. It feels like Christmas with all the wrapping paper and gift bags flying around. My mom is turning 86 this year. She’s hard to shop for, but she does love books. Thankfully, members in Piano with Rebecca B recently shared their favorite piano books — and now I’ve got a...

Hi Reader, Ever feel like your playing should sound better? You’re hitting all the right notes, doing your best to “feel” the musi …but it still sounds kind of flat. You hear a professional play the same piece and it suddenly comes alive. But what are they doing that you’re not? Here’s the truth: they’re not just feeling more. They’re reading expression right from the score — and making intentional choices with every phrase. In this week’s video, I walk you through exactly how that works. Check...
