What piano players wish

Hello Reader,

Last week’s question ("if you could fix one thing in your piano playing overnight, what would it be?") really lit up my inbox. I was excited because it felt like a real two way conversation, not me shouting into a void.

Clear themes jumped out. The most frequent one (which surprised me) was sightreading. I'm releasing a video on that this week, so watch your inbox.

And here's some help for the most popular wishes. Click the link to see my video on each one.

1. Practicing that actually sticks

2. Technique (this link goes to a whole playlist, the software won't display a preview)

3. How to play with more expression

4. Rhythm

5. Performance anxiety

6. Memorizing. We’re doing this right now inside Piano with Rebecca B. Join us to participate in the monthly challenge (a step-by-step 4-week plan for memorizing a short excerpt): https://www.skool.com/pianowithrebeccab

Some answers really struck me. One was simple and brave: I want to let go of playing everything “right” and have more fun.

Theo told me he replied precisely because the question wasn’t easy to answer —and he’s wishing for reassurance that with practice, the skills he longs for will come.

I can say with great confidence: YES. With the right practice and guidance, they do.

Thanks for reading and keep your eye out for that sightreading video.

Happy practicing,

Rebecca

A milestone: one performer said they loved how another made the silences part of the music. That one comment opened a whole conversation — about how actors use silence to further the drama, about concerts that teach you to listen differently (Víkingur Ólafsson), and about how Chopin Nocturnes we played in high school feel completely different now that we’ve lived...
