The kind of silence that changed everything

Hello Reader,

This Sunday I had piano workshop for my in real life students. We've been meeting together every month since 2020.

A milestone: one performer said they loved how another made the silences part of the music. That one comment opened a whole conversation — about how actors use silence to further the drama, about concerts that teach you to listen differently (Víkingur Ólafsson), and about how Chopin Nocturnes we played in high school feel completely different now that we’ve lived more of life.

After the playing we sat around with food and kept talking. It was warm, curious, and full of camaraderie. That’s the exact mood I try to create in the live online performance workshops in Piano with Rebecca B: a space to play without needing to be perfect, to explore the shape of silence and the shades of feeling, and to leave feeling more confident and genuinely happier with your music.

We hold two performance workshops each month: the Intermediate Performance Workshop and the All-Level Performance Workshop. I move the time/days around so people in all time zones have a chance to play live.

Here's what a member had to say about our online workshops.

Hello Reader, Last week’s question ("if you could fix one thing in your piano playing overnight, what would it be?") really lit up my inbox. I'm releasing a video on that this week, so watch your inbox. And here's some help for the most popular wishes. Click the link to see my video on each one. 1. Practicing that...
