I was so excited to find this!

Hey there!

I've been researching what's out there about how Chopin taught, including on Youtube (for better or worse). The algorithm did its thing and suggested a video which I loved and immediately wanted to share with you.

It's called "Chopin Tradition Recordings: 7 Pianists Who Studied with Chopin’s Pupils."

These pianists learned from people who were directly taught by Chopin himself.

For me what stood out is their singing sound, how the melody is effortlessly projected over the accompaniment, and how their phrasing feels so free in comparison to more modern performances.

Of course each pianist brings their own personality to the music, and in fact this was often noted as a feature of Chopin's teaching - that he tried to get each student to express their own unique musicality.

In my upcoming free Chopin Piano Practicing Secrets workshop I'll do a deep dive into what Chopin's students said (well, actually, wrote) about how he taught and my take how we can apply his advice.

👉 Btw, I rescheduled the workshop to MONDAY March 17th at 4 p.m.

Click on the image below to sign up for alerts from Youtube. I'll also email you reminders. Yes, there will be a replay available after the workshop.

Hope to see you there!

Hello Reader, This Sunday I had piano workshop for my in real life students. We've been meeting together every month since 2020. A milestone: one performer said they loved how another made the silences part of the music. That one comment opened a whole conversation — about how actors use silence to further the drama, about concerts that teach you to listen differently (Víkingur Ólafsson), and about how Chopin Nocturnes we played in high school feel completely different now that we’ve lived...

Hello Reader, Last week’s question ("if you could fix one thing in your piano playing overnight, what would it be?") really lit up my inbox. I was excited because it felt like a real two way conversation, not me shouting into a void. Clear themes jumped out. The most frequent one (which surprised me) was sightreading. I'm releasing a video on that this week, so watch your inbox. And here's some help for the most popular wishes. Click the link to see my video on each one. 1. Practicing that...
